VAMOS: Where Dreams Meet Opportunity

(This article was written by Beth Marie Cantu Ensign and was featured in the September 2025 issue of Explore Harlingen Magazine.)

Since 1996, the Valley Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities and Scholarships (VAMOS) has been a bridge for first-generation college students from low-income backgrounds in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV). Founded by a group of local civic and business leaders who saw a troublingly low graduation rate for students earning their first degree, the organization began with a clear mission: to provide both financial assistance and mentorship so these students could achieve their higher education goals.

Nearly 30 years later, that mission has not only endured but expanded. Under the leadership of Executive Director Mary De Leon, VAMOS has awarded more than 1,400 scholarships totaling over $26 million.

But as De Leon emphasizes, VAMOS is “more than just a scholarship.” Early in the program’s history, mentorship was added as a core component to ensure recipients had the guidance and support they needed throughout college. Today, students are paired with peer mentors in their first two years, then with professional mentors in their junior and senior years to help coach them on their path toward their new careers. The organization also encourages scholars to form student-led VAMOS organizations on their campuses, creating a network of support and family, even when they are far from home.

That support extends well beyond graduation. Alumni return to mentor current students, speak at orientations, contribute to fundraising efforts, and remain active advocates for education. And the results speak for themselves: VAMOS boasts an impressive 96 percent graduation rate.

VAMOS’ impact is evident through the success stories of its alumni. Dr. Cruz, once a valedictorian from a low-income family in Edcouch-Elsa, used his scholarship to attend Yale, earn a medical degree, and return as a respected doctor in his respective field. Recent graduate Julian, also a Yale alumnus, leveraged multiple internships into a career with Procter & Gamble in Boston—an opportunity made possible by his hard work and the help of VAMOS.

De Leon’s passion for her work is evident. With 34 years of experience in higher education before taking the helm at VAMOS, she brings not only administrative expertise but also a deep understanding of the students and their journey. “Our students know they can reach me any time—call, text, email, or just drop by,” she says.

The organization’s achievements are rooted in strong community support. Fundraising events, local business partnerships, and individual donors make VAMOS’ work possible. “We are fully supported by our community,” De Leon says. “That’s why we’ve been able to continue helping our students year after year.”

Her message to young readers is simple but powerful: “Believe in yourself. Follow the guidance of your mentors. Take advantage of opportunities—because they’re going to change your life completely, and your family’s as well.” She encourages high school students to apply for as many scholarships as possible, reminding them that persistence is essential in the competitive application process.

For nearly three decades, VAMOS has become more than a scholarship provider—it has been a catalyst for transformation. One scholarship can change a student’s life. One mentor can change the course of a career. And together, they can change a community.
