Rock and Roll Never Dies: The Furytones Keep the Spirit Alive

(This article was written by Beth Marie Cantu Ensign and was featured in the May 2025 issue of Explore Harlingen Magazine .) In a modern world where music trends come and go, one band in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) keeps the spirit of vintage rock and roll alive. Meet The Furytones— a dynamic local group that channels the golden era of the 50s and 60s with infectious energy, genuine heart, and a sound that brings audiences to their feet. While two members are related, the full band is a collective of talented musicians, each bringing his own flavor to the stage. What started as a humble praise band in 2010 has blossomed into a beloved musical staple across the RGV, fueled by passion, nostalgia, and a deep-rooted family bond. “[T]he band started because we were both very active in our church community,” Albert Jaimez, bassist, recalls. (Nathan Jaimez, his son and drummer for The Furytones, had asked his father to help him out with the music ministry for a church retreat.) And what started as a six-song repertoire quickly grew into something much bigger when the community took notice. As the story goes, the band played an early gig, once they had added their classic rock sounds to their setlist, and local television and radio personality Richard Loya happened to be in the audience. Enthralled by their sound, he invited them to perform live on his show, “The Long and Winding Road,” launching them into the local spotlight. From there, invitations from venues like the Elks Lodge, American Legion, and various bars followed. Though their gigs have grown, the heart of The Furytones has always remained the same: good music, shared memories, and joy. The father-son bond adds a sentimental layer to every performance. “I look back and Nathan’s on drums and I go ‘wow, and my son's back there.’ You know, like, how much better can this get?” Albert reflects proudly. Lead singer Michael Canales and rhythm guitarist Cayetano “Cat” Garza round out the band, with Cat’s brother, David Garza, joining them on guitar occasionally. Their name, The Furytones, is a quirky product of improvisation. During band practice, the group was struggling to decide on a name. An email address jokingly thrown out sparked the inspiration: “How about, dude, The Furytones,” Nathan remembers. “It’s so unique.” Their retro, raw sound reflects who they are—unapologetically real, with a deep, unmistakable love for the music they make. The band embraces imperfections, focusing more on feeling and connection with themselves and their audience rather than perfectly polished precision. “We’re nerds who just love old music,” Nathan laughs. “We play 50s/60s rock and roll, and yes, we keep rock and roll alive.” Practice sessions reflect this mix of enthusiasm and purpose. “Our practices are laid back but with structure,” Albert says. Songs are chosen based on what the band loves, often coinciding with what their audience loves, too. While currently focused on covers, original music may be in their future. They envision an EP or album that captures their essence, with each member contributing his own musical influence. “We all have the same taste. Why haven’t we done an original oldie [style] song?” Albert wonders aloud. For The Furytones, the goal isn't fame—it's legacy. When asked what advice they would give to young artists, Albert says, “Use your gifts, don’t hold them in, don’t keep them to yourself.” Nathan echoes that sentiment, adding, “Be genuine. Be yourself… You’re bound to make something great.” The Furytones are not just a band but a reminder that music rooted in love, authenticity, and a sense of fun will always have a place—and a willing audience.
